Power For Life Now, November Newsletter

It has been a busy November indeed!

I have been working on new music for the Joy Collaborative and the newest song is now on the site, ready to be enjoyed! This is a song I heard in a dream in October, well, at least I heard three lines of the chorus. I woke up and felt this was something I needed to flesh out and create. So, please go to www.thejoycollaborative.com and click “LISTEN” on the menu for “His Name is Holy.” It is the second of nine songs that will be on the web site. Better yet, just click this link www.thejoycollaborative.com/listen to go right to the listen page. Go to the second song but listen to the first song first, if you have not yet done that. It is full of joy and fun also! All songs can be listened to for free. Just click and enjoy! If you like what you are hearing, tell someone else who might enjoy a little joy!

On December 7th, at 5 pm, I am performing in concert with the Mosaic Gospel Choir, under the direction of Gary Grundei. The performance will be at Wesley Center, 1290 Folsom Street in Boulder, CO 80302. The choir will be performing my new song, “His Name is Holy”, and I will be singing the lead. I will also be performing my poem, “I Am Still Here”. The choir will provide a stirring background accompaniment as I recite. The poem is from my book, “I’m a Black Man, Who are You? It speaks to the struggles we go through and the triumphs we achieve as we journey through life, to be able to say, ” I am still here.” I will also be singing the lead on a song by Hezekiah Walker, a well-known gospel artist and writer. The song is “I’m Gonna Make It.” The Mosaic Gospel Choir is a wonderful group of singers who give powerful voice to hope and faith, with passion and creativity. You do not want to miss this concert!

Our November Tap Into Transformation was another milestone, as we began our third year! These once-a-month events have been so fun, and the community that has attended has been rich with wonderful people. Jeannine and I feel blessed to be doing this work. We have been making promo videos for the past six months. They are short iMovies. I have gotten better with each one. You can check them out at my Power For Life Now, LLC, Facebook page.

As the days turn colder, may your nights be warmer
and may you have Power For Life Now!

Achieving Breakthroughs

Breakthroughs are powerful portals to new levels of living. It is doing something that you have not done yet, that propels you forward energetically, spiritually, and psychologically. Some breakthroughs affect all of humankind, as when a new medical cure is achieved. Some affect a unique set of people, as when Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile, and proved that it could be done. Since then, many athletes have broken that barrier to achieve personal breakthroughs.

For the past couple of years, beginning in 2012, I have been observing the University of Colorado’s football team. It has been through several coaching changes and lots of adversity as it seeks to establish itself as a new member of the Pac-12 Football conference.

The new coach, Mike McIntyre, has been making steady progress with his team. He has instilled in them the work ethic that it will take to achieve a breakthrough. The other ingredient I see developing is in simply believing in themselves enough, as a team, to win. They have come close on several occasions, even going into overtime playing the number 25-ranked team, UCLA.

Watching this effort to achieve breakthrough reminds me that for any of us to achieve a new level of living… be it in our work, our level of play, or our spiritual lives, is a process. First, we must be willing to do the work. To try, to fail, and to keep trying. Secondly, we must be willing to believe that we can achieve, otherwise the effort will be stifled. This belief must come from somewhere. It may come from acknowledging that others have done it, so you can to. It may come from acknowledging past victories that have led you to this new place, preparing for new victory. And thirdly, there must be a letting go. Once you believe and are doing the work, there are still factors out of your control that are also in play. And so, preparation leads to patience. The breakthrough will happen when it will happen. It will happen of its own, at the right time.

Moment of Clarity:
Without effort and belief, the grace that occurs within progress is harder to achieve.

If you want something you have never had, you must do something you have never done.

May you have Power For Life Now!

Sharpettes and Annie Ruth’s Truths, November

I began creating what I call Sharpettes over 30 years ago. As a speaker and writer they became my own way of sharpening my understanding of the meaning, power, and energy of a single word. I am sharing them publicly now in hopes that you will enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed creating them.

The first line is the word.
The second line defines or describes the word twice, 4 syllables for each attempt. You may place a comma or semi-colon between each attempt. So, the second line has a total of 8 syllables.
The third line is a simile. It always begins with the word “Like”, and paints a picture of the word in 10 or 11 syllables.

On some Sharpettes the 4th or 5th syllable of the third line will rhyme with the word on the first line itself. This can yield another insight into the word chosen, and provides a unique and fun poetic challenge.

Foolish, inane; Not smart or wise
Like going to a dark room to look for light

Annie Ruth’s Truths are my renderings of folk wisdom and country common sense, gained from a lifetime of listening to my mom, who has a unique way with words, as well as a witty, joyous and playful attitude to go with it! Always fun or sassy, they tell the truth and can make you laugh, shake your head and go “Hmph!” or even make you shout, “Whaaat?!”

“The reason the world seems to be run by idiots is that it is already being run by a genius, and anyone who seeks to assume that position must be an idiot.”
