Power For Life Now, September Newsletter

The September Tap Into transformation was a sassy and classy affair! Jeannine and I used famed dance icons Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as inspiration for the evening. It was so much fun teaching classic tap dance steps and encouraging all of us to let out our dazzle and pizzazz. Our participants made even the hardest moves (which included a jump and spin) look easy. (Click on the image below to watch our short video.)

JGA-DS_Tap_Sept

After some great food we headed into the second part of our monthly event. We paired our guests and asked them to write 10 words that meant a lot to them. We then asked them to choose one word, and then create a Sharpette for that word.

Each pair then read the second and third lines of their new creation and the rest of us attempted to guess the word they were describing. A prize of a beautiful new pen was given to the person that guessed the word!

Here are a few of the creations:

Silly
Fun and crazy, Expressive play
Like Joan Rivers, Robin Williams, and laughter.

Sight

Halloween

Like a Thriller video with Vincent Price.

Next month’s Tap Into Transformation will be centered on the theme, “Where Do You Find Joy?”  It will feature African influenced music created by Jeannine and I along with collaborator Gary Grundei for our JOY COLLABORATIVE project.

Speaking of The Joy Collaborative, we are moving into the final months of the project. We are in the process of creating 9 songs that will be streamed on the website we are developing. It will be a place you can go to dive into the energy of JOY. Stay tuned!

Next month Jeannine and I will be at the Messiah Community Church in Denver.

Jeannine is the main presenter during their St. Hildegard Week. This is a week the church’s pastor was inspired to create as a way of allowing his congregation (a Lutheran church) to enjoy Dr. Jeannine Goode-Allen’s expertise on this 12th century German nun. It will be from Oct. 4 – 7. There will be a St. Hildegard style worship service in which Jeannine will deliver a sermon, on Sunday, Oct. 5th, 9:30am. Afterwards, Jeannine will lecture in the Adult Forum at 11am. She will also lecture on Tuesday Oct. 7th at 6:30pm. In addition, a St. Hildegard exhibit that Jeannine commissioned will be on display all week. I will join Jeannine for parts of her presentations as we tap dance together in what we call Tap Prayer. St. Hildegard is credited with creating the first opera, and using the arts as a powerful medium of sacred expression. I am sure she would want to tap dance with us!

Also next month, On Oct. 22nd, I will be in Los Angeles, as a guest lecturer at Dorsey High School.

Marlene Carter, a nationally recognized, National Board Certified, English instructor, has selected my book, I’M A BLACK MAN, WHO ARE YOU? to use in her classes. She has ordered 60 copies! I have been invited me to present and perform, and help students begin thinking about and writing their own poetry dealing with self-identity. I will also engage them in developing the skills needed for public speaking. I am excited for this opportunity, to say the least! I am especially honored because Ms. Carter is such a distinguished teacher. She is an Associate Director of the UCLA Writing Project, has served as the Co-director of the California Writing Project, and is also a fellow of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This is a great opportunity to share my work in a context that serves students directly and that is prominently featured in the book, namely school.

As fall is upon us, may the changing colors of the foliage, and the chilling of the air remind us that change is part of life.

May the changes you are in the midst of be filled with grace, wisdom, appreciation, light and love. And may you have POWER FOR LIFE, NOW!

David

Mid-life.

midlife-crisis-ahead

In our ability to rethink our lives lies our greatest power to change them. What we have called “middle age” need not be seen as a turning point toward death. It can be viewed as a magical turning point toward life as we’ve never known it, if we allow ourselves the power of an independent imagination – thought-forms that don’t flow in a perfunctory manner from ancient assumptions merely handed down to us, but rather flower into new archetypal images of a humanity just getting started at 45 or 50.

What we’ve learned by that time, from both our failures an well as our successes, tends to have humbled us into purity. When we were young, we had energy but we were clueless about what to do with it. Today, we have less energy, perhaps, but we have far more understanding of what each breath of life is for. And now at last, we have a destiny to fulfill-not a destiny of a life that’s simply over, but rather a destiny of a life that is finally truly lived.

Midlife is not a crisis; it’s a time of rebirth. It’s not a time to accept your death; it’s a time to accept your life – and to finally, truly live it, as you and you alone know deep in you heart it was meant to be lived.

Affirmation:
I can decide to be youthful everyday of my life.

Prayer:
Help me to remember all the blessings that have come my way. May I remember that I am part of you, God, and that you are always the most ancient and the youngest, since you are always at the beginning of all we endeavor to do.

May you have Power for Life Now!

Sharpettes and Annie Ruth’s Truths, September

I began creating what I call Sharpettes over 30 years ago. As a speaker and writer they became my own way of sharpening my understanding of the meaning, power, and energy of a single word. I am sharing them publicly now in hopes that you will enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed creating them.

The first line is the word.
The second line defines or describes the word twice, 4 syllables for each attempt. You may place a comma or semi-colon between each attempt. So, the second line has a total of 8 syllables.
The third line is a simile. It always begins with the word “Like”, and paints a picture of the word in 10 or 11 syllables.

On some Sharpettes the 4th or 5th syllable of the third line will rhyme with the word on the first line itself. This can yield another insight into the word chosen, and provides a unique and fun poetic challenge.

Enjoy!
David

Annie Ruth’s Truths are my renderings of folk wisdom and country common sense, gained from a lifetime of listening to my mom, who has a unique way with words, as well as a witty, joyous and playful attitude to go with it! Always fun or sassy, they tell the truth and can make you laugh, shake your head and go “Hmph!” or even make you shout, “Whaaat?!”

“You are not going to worry my black hair gray”…
(Meaning… I am not going to get old before my time worrying about you. I am not in control of what you do… and don’t expect me to step in and try to save you from yourself, when you won’t listen to reason or wisdom, and seem hell bent on doing what you want to do, even if it is the worst thing for you.  Don’t come crying to me playing victim when the walls come crashing in…’cause I already told you what’s gonna happen. So there, I’m through with it.)…. Hence, “You are not going to worry my black hair gray.”
